CSUMB remains No. 7 in NCAA West Regional poll
SEASIDE, Calif. – 2013 Cal State Monterey Bay Men's Soccer Season Checklist: Most Goals – check (tied 31); Most Assists – check (30); Most wins – check (tied 9); First NCAA Regional Ranking (7th), Ticket to CCAA Tournament – Pending.
With a win at Cal Poly Pomona and a heartbreaking loss at No. 18 UC San Diego, the Otters dropped out of first place in the CCAA North Division standings for the first time this season. Still, they trail division leader Sonoma State by just one point with two games to play.
The Otters travel to San Francisco State on Friday, Nov. 1 at 12:30 p.m. and conclude the regular season on Sunday, Nov 3 hosting No. 2 regionally ranked Chico State at 11:30 a.m. The Seawolves also play Friday and Sunday but have both games are on the road, stopping at Humboldt State and East Bay.
"Our last two regular season matches are big ones for us as we sit seventh in the latest NCAA West Region poll," said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings. "We need to go 2-0 to have any consideration for the NCAA Tournament as the top six advance from the west region.
There are a few scenarios that need to come into play for the Otters to make their second CCAA Championship appearance. One positive note for the 2013 Otters, they own the head-to-head after achieving a win in Seaside and a tie at Sonoma earlier this season. If CSUMB wins both games and Sonoma State wins one and ties the other, the Otters are in. Another scenario is if CSUMB wins one game and ties another, the Otters would need Sonoma to lose one of its games. The final scenario for CSUMB to extend its best season to date is if Sonoma loses both games, CSUMB will at least need a tie to advance.
Their first trip came in 2007 after finishing the regular season with a 2-2 tie over Cal State L.A. and earning the No. 4 seed. The 2007 squad saw its magical season come to an end in a 9-8 shootout loss after CSUMB and Cal State Dominguez Hills were unable to score in its allotted 110 minutes.
"Sunday will be a big day regardless of what we do Friday as it will be senior day," Cummings said. "We will say goodbye to our seniors and welcome them to the Alumni side."
The seven Otter seniors are Troy Blank, Conor Delaney, Brandon Green, Saydou Kamara, Cody Lutz, Juan Montellano and Servando Perez.
"Each have represented the program well both on and off the field," Cummings said. "I am happy to have gotten the chance to coach them and see them develop as student-athletes. Our seniors have helped to raise the benchmark for our program as we move forward with the program."
