Junior Anthony Velazquez scores his third goal of 2013.
BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double overtime decision to Cal State Stanislaus Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
The Otters remain on top of the CCAA North Division standings despite falling to 7-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in conference action. The Warriors (5-7-1, 4-7-0 CCAA) earned their fourth conference win of 2013.
CSUMB came out hot, scoring in the fourth minute. Junior
Anthony Velazquez (Gilroy HS) took a rebound off of
George Plakerous' (Columbia, Mo./Hickman HS) shot and pushed it past the goal line.
A Stanislaus goal in the 87th minute by a Danny Ochoa direct kick forced extra time.
CSUMB looked like it clinched the golden goal three times but were denied on each occasion. Three minutes into the first overtime, Velazquez had an open look from 15 yards but his shot went off the cross bar.
Two minutes later, junior
Alberto Anguiano's (Oxnard/Pacifica HS) shot from inside 10 yards went off the post and cleared off the line.
The Warriors clinched the winner in the 108th minute on a chip over CSUMB keeper
Evan Drake (Sacramento/El Camino HS).
CSUMB finished with a 20-16 shot advantage and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks over Stanislaus.
The Otters are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 20, hosting Cal State East Bay at 11:30 a.m.
