BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Junior Anthony Velazquez's (Gilroy HS) goal in the 88th minute took the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team's game at Sonoma State into overtime. The showdown between the top two teams in the CCAA North Division had to settle for a 3-3 double overtime tie on Friday afternoon.

With their second draw of the season, the Otters now stand at 6-3-2 overall and 4-3-2 in CCAA action. CSUMB remains on top of the CCAA North Division with 14 points while Sonoma State (4-4-3, 3-4-2 CCAA) sits in second with 11 points.

"We look to win every game, but the reality of it was that we just needed to get a point out of this game," said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings. "We still control our destiny and need to focus on our next game."

Behind 3-2 with 10 minutes remaining and Sonoma playing with only 10 due to a red card, the Otters got four unanswered shots on goal with the final one being the equalizer to force overtime. Velazquez received a ball just inside the six-yard box from a slicing delivery by Max Madrigal (Oxnard HS) only to finish it in bottom left corner

Both teams got a shot on frame in the final five minutes of the second overtime.  Freshman Chris Koski (Cupertino/Monta Visa HS) took a header but was saved by keeper Beau Diaz in the 108th minute while sophomore Evan Drake (Sacramento/El Camino HS) stopped SSU's Brenton Frame's shot with 30 seconds remaining.

For the game, CSUMB held a 19-13 shot advantage while Sonoma owned a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Otters got the scoring started in the 10th minute on a 10-foot blast off the foot of Madrigal.  The goal marked the junior's second goal of the season and gave CSUMB a 1-0 early advantage.

CSUMB extended the lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute when Alberto Anguiano (Oxnard/Pacifica HS) finished a one-on-one opportunity by nutmegging Diaz to find the back of the net.

Sonoma State's Taylor Varnadore scored back-to-back goals to equalize the game at 2-2.  His first goal came inside the final five minutes of the first half on a shot from a yard out. The Seawolves opened the second half the equalizer just 30 second in when Varnadore headed the ball over Drake on a bouncing pass from midfield.

The Seawolves took their only lead of the game on a successful penalty kick by Nico Spann in the 49th minute after CSUMB was called on a slide-tackling foul.

Sonoma had to play down a player for the final 20 minutes of regulation after a red card was issued due to going in with cleats up.

"I am proud that we played with maturity after the red card was given," Cumming said. "We stuck with the plan. We were patient and we got rewarded the goal."

The Otters next travel to Arcata to take on Humboldt State on Sunday, Oct. 13. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
