SCOUTING SONOMA STATE: In the CCAA preseason poll, the Seawolves were picked to finish second in the north division and qualify for the conference tournament for the first time since 2008. Under the direction of second-year Head Coach Emiria Slazmann Dunn, the 2012 Seawolves are upperclassman heavy with eight seniors and 10 juniors. SSU's 2011 leading scorer, senior Ashley Martin, has one goal and two assists in the first two games of her season.
LAST MEETING: The Seawolves dominate the series with a 14-0-2 record. In 2011, SSU shut out the Otters in both meetings (3-0,2-0).
HUMBOLDT HAZING: The
Humboldt State women's soccer team received a three-game suspension due to hazing incident in August. The CSUMB-HSU game slated for Sept. 9 has been cancelled and the Oct. 11 game has been moved to a home game for the Otters.
UP NEXT: The Otters take to the road next week, traveling to Chico State (Sept. 14) and Cal State Stanislaus (Sept. 16).
OFFENSE ROCKS: The theme for the Otters in 2012 is to be more of an offensive threat and that is exactly what they have accomplished in the first two games. The Otters trumped the shot record on both occasions last week with 19 shots against Academy of Art and 20 at Dominican. CSUMB is averaging 19.5 shots per game including 19 shots on goal.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: Four teams represent the CCAA in the
first official national poll of 2012 released Tuesday, Sept. 4. Chico State debuts at No. 3, followed by No. 13 Cal State Stanislaus, No. 17 Sonoma State and No. 25 UC San Diego.
HAPPY HOME: The 3-1 win over Academy of Art on Aug. 31 was CSUMB's first home victory since the 1-0 shutout against Humboldt State on Oct. 29, 2010. All three Otter wins in 2011 came on the road.
