One More For The Road Then Otters Return Home

The Otters will conclude their five-match roadtrip Friday at Cal Poly Pomona before returning home for the first time since Sept. 7 to host Cal State East Bay Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Men's soccer opens weekend at Pomona before returning home for East Bay Sunday

SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team took a big step forward on its recent Southern California trip. They'll try to step all the way over the hump this time as they finish their five-match road swing Friday (Sept. 28) at Cal Poly Pomona before returning home to host Cal State East Bay Sunday (Sept. 30).

“Our backs have played well but we've had inconsistent play from our midfield and strikers,” says CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings. “We haven't played a game where both parts have been good; so far we haven't put a complete game together yet.”

“Those who haven't been able to watch may not know that these boys aren't playing like an 0-6 team,” he continues. “We have lost games by fluke goals, where every mistake seems to have a cost.”

THIS WEEK IN OTTER MEN'S SOCCER HISTORY

Andrew Burkhammer scored two goals and assisted on a third as CSUMB defeated BYU–Hawaii 5–1 on Sept. 24, 2007. The five goals are an Otter record at the NCAA level.

OTTER MEN'S SOCCER ODDS & ENDS

BREAKING THE SEAL: The Otters finally broke the seal on their road scoring ledger, netting their first road goal Sunday on a fine Julian Salas effort at Cal State L.A. The Otters will look to keep the ball rolling at Pomona, where they have averaged 1.5 goals per game.

RECORD WATCH: Although shutout last weekend, senior Max Brixey scored his eighth career goal Sept. 7 against Sonoma State to take sole possession of the No. 4 spot on the CSUMB NCAA Division II career list. His 26 total points place him at No. 4 on that list as well. Senior forward Andrew Breault picked up his 10th career assist against Sonoma, moving him into a tie with Brixey and Nic Torricelli (2005–09) for the No. 3 spot on that list.

FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED: Though its scoring pace is slow so far this season, the Otter offense is creating chances. CSUMB has put a higher percentage of its shots on frame than its opponents (42.9 vs. 41.2 percent) through the first six matches.

WORKING HARD OR HARDLY WORKING? The Otters have played six matches so far in 2012 and, unusually, have yet to see overtime. The Otters have failed to play at least one overtime match through their first six matches just twice in their tenure at the NCAA Division II level. Should they make it through the weekend in regulation, it will mark just the second time they have gone that far without needing extra time (15 matches in 2004). CSUMB has averaged four overtime matches per season since joining forces with the NCAA in 2004. They have never gone a season without playing into overtime.
