Andrea Davis scores golden goal as Otters get first win over nationally-ranked foe

BOX SCORE CHICO, Calif. – Friday night's 2-1 overtime win over No. 14 Chico State is arguably the biggest victory in Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer history. Not only did it give the young Otter squad an early leg up in the CCAA Tournament race, it marked the first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in its eight-plus seasons of NCAA competition.

“The team was very excited to beat the 14th best team in the nation in Division II,” said Head Coach Erin Reinke. “They have worked so hard to get to this point, to prove they have what it take to play with the best in the country.”

Senior midfielder Andrea Davis's golden goal in the 97th minute handed the Otters their first win over Chico State in 12 meetings (1-12-0). The Otters improved to 3-1-0 and 1-1-0 in the CCAA with the win. Chico State falls to 3-2-0 and 1-2-0.

Davis tapped in the winner after freshman forward Kristen Womack drew the Wildcat keeper to set her up.

The Otters fell behind early, as Chico State got on the scoreboard with a goal in the eighth minute. Gail Bassett's header came off the foot of Jennie Barto on a corner.

In the 26th minute, junior forward Shoshana Wangerin's ball handling skills broke down the Wildcat defense. She quickly slipped a pass to Womack who took a touch before cracking a low liner inside the near post to even the game at 1-1.

“We continue to get better everyday as a team,” Reinke said. “Coach Austin (Risenhoover) and I couldn't be more proud of the team on where we are at so far in the season. The credit goes back onto the players because they believe in the team concept."

CSUMB will face Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday, Sept. 9 at Warrior Stadium.  On their last visit to Turlock, the Otters pulled off a 1-0 win in front of more than 1,300 fans.
