SEASIDE, Calif. -- The No. 9 Cal State Monterey Bay softball team will look to secure a California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament bid when it hosts San Francisco State in a four–game CCAA series Friday and Saturday (April 13–14) at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters' magic number versus both Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay is two, meaning they clinch over either team with a combination of CSUMB wins and Sonoma/East Bay losses equalling two.

“Our goal, as it has been from the beginning, is to put ourselves in position to win a championship,” says CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney. “While clinching as soon as possible would be great, it's just one more step down the path to our ultimate goal.”

The Otters are coming off a 4–1 week in which they averaged 6.4 runs per game as they continue to lead the CCAA in batting (.323) and runs scored (6.42) by a wide margin.

The Otters haven't faced SFSU this season, but they hold a 16–10 lead in the all–time series, including a 16–2 lead in the last 18 meetings. CSUMB has won 7 of the 8 games played between the teams in Seaside.

The Otters enter this weekend's action with some gaudy home numbers. The are hitting .339 and averaging 7.73 runs per game while outscoring their opponents by 4.4 runs per game at the Otter Sports Complex.

Seven of the nine CSUMB regulars are hitting .320 or better in 15 home games this season, led by Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly HS) and Nina Villanueva (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) who are each hitting .455. Those numbers aren't out of line for the freshmen dynamic duo, however, as their respectively cumulative batting averages are .466 and .447.

Reinhardt continues to lead CSUMB in the circle (14–3, 1.59 ERA and 3 saves) followed by sophomore Kylie Linnane (Salinas/Notre Dame HS), who owns an 11–2 record and a 2.31 ERA.

Student Appreciation Day

Saturday, April 14 will be Student Appreciation Day at Otter Softball. In partnership with Sodexo and CSUMB Associated Students, there will be a FREE BBQ Lunch for CSUMB STUDENTS that includes: 1/4lb Hot Dog or Hamburger, Chips and Soda.

Sodexho will also be selling this lunch combo as part of its expanded concessions. The hot dog combo will sell for $5 while the hamburger combo will sell for $6.

Otter Softball Odds & Ends

DOUBLING THEIR PLEASURE: The Otters turned three more double plays last week and now rank No. 2 in the NCAA Division II national stats at 0.62 per game. Their 26 total double plays this season breaks the school record of 25 turned in 2008.

TRIPLING THEIR PLEASURE: Angelina Orozco (Clovis East HS) hit her eighth triple of the season at Cal State Stanislaus to give CSUMB 21 triples so far in 2012. That easily eclipses the previous record of 11 triples set twice previously (in 2006 and 2010). Individually, Orozco began the week rank No. 1 nationally in total triples. Her total ranks No. 1 in the CSUMB single–season record book as well.

DRIVING HER POINT HOME: Nina Villanueva continues to raise her school single–season RBI record to milestone levels. After besting the mark set by Shae Olds (44) she drove in nine more last week to eclipse the 50 mark, entering this week's action with 54. The CCAA record is 69 set by Humboldt's Natalie Galletly in 2007.

HAVE MERCY: The Otters defeated Grand Canyon via the 8–run rule in bracket play at the TOC on Mar. 30, marking the eighth time this season they've done that—already the third most in a season in school history. The 2009 and 2010 Otters each posted 10 run–rule wins.

FASTEST TO 30: The Otters reached the 30–win mark for the 4th time in school history with last Tuesday's win over Hawaii–Hilo. It's the fast they've ever reached 30 wins, besting the 2010 team that did it in 46 games. For the record, the CSUMB record for wins in a season is 36 (36–27–1) set in 2009.
