SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 13 Cal State Monterey Bay softball team continued its torrid start to the 2012 season, scoring 19 runs on 18 hits to sweep a doubleheader from Cal State San Bernardino, 5–2 and 14–0 (5 innings) Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB (13–3, 5–1 CCAA) used big innings in each game to run its win streak to five. The Otters scored four in the fourth inning of game one to climb out of an early hole before opening game two with a 13–run outburst to put that game away almost before it started. Friday's wins marked the 10th and 11th time in the first 16 games that the Otters have scored four or more runs in an inning.
Senior center fielder
Jamie Moon (Torrance HS) delivered the big blow in game one, hitting a bases loaded double to highlight the fourth–inning rally. That provided ample support for freshman pitcher
Cory Reinhardt (Riverside Poly HS), who settled down after giving up singles runs in the first two innings to finish with five frames of four–hit, shutout ball.
The nightcap began with the Otters scoring a baker's dozen in a two–out rally that began with began with four consecutive walks. After
Nina Villanueava's (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) RBI walk put a crack in the dam, two–run singles from
Danielle Onken (Oakdale HS) and
Nicole Pires (Ontario/Colony HS) began the deluge.
Ashley Andruski (Poway HS) added her first collegiate double and
Angelina Orozco (Clovis East HS) hit her second triple of the season before the floodwaters finally subsided.
Sophomore pitcher
Kylie Linnane (Salinas/Notre Dame HS) was the beneficiary of the epic output, but she hardly needed it. Linnane (5–0) ran her scoreless innings streak to an even 10 by shutting out the Coyotes on three hits over four innings Friday.
Moon extended her hitting streak to eight games, going 2–for–6 with two runs and three RBIs. Orozco (3–for–6), Villanueva (3–for–5) and
Skyler Valdivia (2–for–5) each hit safely in both games Friday.
Left fielder Jamie Leffingwell led the CSUSB (7–8, 3–3) offense with three hits, including a 2–for–3 effort in game one.
The Otters and Coyotes will conclude their four–game series Saturday with an encore doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
