THIS WEEK IN OTTER VOLLEYBALL HISTORY
The Otters picked up their first–ever California Collegiate Athletics Association victory by defeating Cal State Stanislaus 30–18, 30–25, 30–26 in Turlock on Nov. 6, 2004.
OTTER VOLLEYBALL ODDS & ENDS
JOHNSTON SETS THE STANDARD: Sophomore setter Kelsey Johnston passed for 77 assists over the weekend, giving her 852 helpers for the season to break the CSUMB record of 844 set by Nicki Sanderson in 2006. Johnston has five matches remaining in the regular season to potentially reach 1,000 assists.
AND THEN THERE WAS ONE: Sophomore outside hitter Julia Ashen posted 36 kills on the Pomona–Humboldt trip last weekend to move past Brittany Etchings (356) into the No. 3 slot on the Otter single season kill list with 360. So why is the heading of this note, “And Then There Was One,” you ask? It's because the only player left for Ashen to catch is Rheann Fall, who had 421 kills in 2009 and 422 kills in her All–America season of 2010.
CAN YOU DIG IT? Freshman libero Rachel Cookus moved into the CSUMB top 10 for digs in a single season with 366, good for the No. 10 spot. Sometime during the next three matches, she should become just the sixth player in Otter history to reach 400 digs in one season.
ON THE BLOCKS: Freshman middle blocker Janai Johnson continues to make her presence felt at the net. Johnson enters the week with 21 block solos in 2012, good for the No. 2 spot on the Otter single season. Christine Ricketts holds the CSUMB record with 29 block solos in 2006.
ENERGY EFFICIENT: The Otter offense enters the week with an aggregate .200 attack percentage. If the season ended today, that would be a CSUMB season record. The record currently is .189 set by the 2009 Otters.
