BOX SCORE

CHICO, Calif. — Several Cal State Monterey Bay players made an impact on the stat sheet Saturday night, but it wasn't enough to break the Otters' season–long road jinx as Chico State pulled away to earn a 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17 win in Acker Gym.

Freshman outside hitter Jessica Malcolm led four Otters in double figures with a season-high 16 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Julia Ashen added 15 as she climbed to within 10 kills of becoming just the second Otter player to reach 400 kills in a season. Sophomore setter Kelsey Johnston dished 49 assists, good for the No. 2 mark in the CSUMB four-set record book and just two off her own school record of 51.

The teams traded early runs in the first set as five Janai Johnson kills kept CSUMB close until the end of Chico's 25-22 win. A Malcolm kill capped an early 5-0 run that gave the Otters the lead for good in the 25-20 set two win.

The match turned in the third set when an Ellie Larronde kill kick-started a 6-0 run that broke a 16-16 tie, pointing the way to Chico's victory. The Wildcats never trailed again in the match.

CSUMB will play its final road match of the season Tuesday when it travels to Hayward looking to complete a season sweep of Cal State East Bay. The Otters return home to close the regular season against nationally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State East Bay Nov. 16-17 in The Kelp Bed.
