Warriors convert two first half set pieces for game's only scores

BOX SCORE

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team simply couldn't find the key to unlocking the Cal State Stanislaus defense Friday, and the result was a 2–0 victory for the Warriors at the Otter Sports Complex.

Stanislaus (5-2-2, 3-2-2 CCAA) converted a pair of first-half set pieces to account for the only scoring. Neither team found the back of the net in the second stanza.

Although the scoreline says otherwise, the first was the more evenly played of Friday's two halves. Possession and scoring chances were fairly even in the first 45 minutes, but the tide turned in Stanislaus' favor just pass the 10-minute mark when Luis Gomez gave a brilliant flick to a Nolan Holdridge free kick, leaving Otter goalkeeper Evan Drake no chance as the ball found the far side net to put the Warriors up 1-0.

Stanislaus added a second goal on another set piece 21 minutes later. This time Guzman took advantage of a lapse in the Otter backline, finding Schad TenBroeck alone in the box. TenBroeck simply backheeled Guzman's pass in for what turned out to be a superfluous insurance marker.

“We put ourselves in the hole with those two set pieces,” said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings. “The first goal was a nice flick and those things happen in a game, but the second one, that was on us.”

The Otters actually out-shot Stanislaus 6-5 in the first half. In the second half, the Warriors took advantage of several miscues in the Otter defensive third to turn the tables and out-shoot CSUMB 9-5. Nevertheless, Cummings saw his team as more dangerous, but lacking the final connection it needed to change the course of the match.

“I thought we were more dangerous going forward, we just couldn't find the final pass” said Cummings. “The effort was there. The guys worked hard. Now we just need to regroup and get ready for Chico on Sunday.”

CSUMB hosts Chico State in the second match of a men's/women's doubleheader Sunday, with men's kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. Immediately preceding the men's match, CSUMB will be honoring several combat wounded U.S. Army and Marine Corps veterans in conjunction with the Wounded Warriors Project. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and help the Otters honor these brave soldiers for their service and sacrifice for our country.
