Otters look to complete season sweeps over Broncos and Lumberjacks

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Looking to finish what it started in September, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team begins its final roadtrip of 2012 looking to complete season sweeps of Cal Poly Pomona (Thursday) and Humboldt State (Saturday). Note that first serve for the Pomona match will be at 5 p.m. while the Humboldt match is scheduled for a traditional 7 p.m. start.

“I really like where we are now,” says CSUMB Head Coach Jody Garry. “We have continued to grow as a team, especially in our serve recieve and block. We have a big next two weeks and I think we are ready to compete and play to win with all four teams."

After meeting Humboldt, the Otters will stay in Northern California to face Cal State Stanislaus (Nov. 9) and Chico State (Nov. 10). They'll end their final roadtrip at Cal State East Bay in Hayward (Nov. 13).

CSUMB returns home to close out the regular season against the top two teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association -- Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego -- Nov. 16-17.

THIS WEEK IN OTTER VOLLEYBALL HISTORY

The Otters matched their school record with 14 aces in a 29–31, 30–20, 30–26, 30–18 win over Cal State Stanislaus on Nov. 2, 2007.

OTTER VOLLEYBALL ODDS & ENDS

HOME SWEET HOME: By defeating Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills over the weekend, the Otters matched the program record for home wins in a season with nine (2007, 2010). The Otters will have two cracks at breaking the record when they host Cal State San Bernardino (Nov. 16) and UC San Diego (Nov. 17).

WINNING WAYS: Last weekend's wins moved the Otter season record to 12–11, marking just the second time in program history the team has been above .500 this late in the season (the 2010 Otters were 15–8 through 23 matches).

CLIMBING TO 300… Sophomore outside hitter Julia Ashen became just the eighth player in Otter history to surpass 300 kills in a season when she combined for 29 kills last weekend. She now owns seventh place in the record book with 324 kills. Brittany Etchings holds the No. 6 spot with 333 kills in 2006. Rheann Fall owns the school record with 422 kills in 2010.

…WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM HER FRIEND: Julia Ashen isn't climbing up the Otter kill list on her own—she's doing it with a helping hand from sophomore setter Kelsey Johnston. With 71 assists last weekend, Johnston vaulted up three spots to No. 3 on the Otter single–season list with 775 assists. She is averaging 9.45 assists per set (itself a CSUMB record). At her current pace, Johnston would become the first Otter to reach 1,000 assists in a season, shattering the Otter season record of 844 set by Nicki Sanderson in 2006.

ON THE BLOCKS: Freshman middle blocker Janai Johnson continues to make her presence felt at the net. Johnson enters the week with 19 block solos in 2012, tied for the No. 2 spot on the Otter single season list with Kimberly Sordello (19 in 2006). Christine Ricketts holds the CSUMB record with 29 block solos in 2006.
