Juan Montellano's first collegiate goal was a match-winner with 1.4 seconds left in overtime Friday against Cal State San Bernardino.
BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — In most circumstances, 1.4 seconds goes by in the blink of an eye. Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team made 1.4 seconds last forever.
Junior midfielder
Juan Montellano was the man who stopped time, tapping home a half-volley from the doorstep with precisely 1.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give CSUMB a stunning 1-0 victory over visiting Cal State San Bernardino.
The win kept San Bernardino (4-5-7, 4-5-5 CCAA) from rewriting the NCAA record book. The Coyotes were 1.4 seconds away from what would have been an NCAA-record eighth tie in 2012. As it stands, they'll head to Cal State East Bay Sunday for their season finale tied with the 2007 Seattle Pacific squad.
Montellano's goal came against the run of play as the Otters made a made dash down the field after gaining possession with less than 30 seconds to play. The ball worked its way to
Julian Salas, who collected the ball on the right touchline at the top of the penalty area extended inside the final 10 seconds.
Salas sent an arcing cross into the goalmouth where a
Servando Perez flick found Montellano on the doorstep. Montellano chested the ball down then sent a ball between goalkeeper Jeff Salt and a Coyote defender into the twine to stop the countdown and delay San Bernardino's shot at history.
Montellano's chance to score the match-winner came due to Otter heroics at the other end of the field four minutes earlier. San Bernardino freshman Ricardo Velasco weaved his way through the Otter defense before being taken down deep inside the penalty area to earn a Coyote penalty kick in the 106th minute. Velasco struck his spot kick low to the left post, but Drake was just a bit better, getting his fingers on the ball for his second penalty save of the season.
Dylan Faggioni followed up with a rebound served on a silver platter, but put his point-blank effort wide to keep the match scoreless.
Beyond the overtime dramatics, both teams had chances in a match-played end-to-end for the full 110 minutes. CSUMB's best chance came in the 77th minute when Salas slipped a short through ball to Montellano at the top of the Coyote penalty area. Montellano struck the ball well but sent it over the bar.
Perez created another great chance from nothing in the 105th minute, but Salt used every inch of his 6-5 frame to tip the 25-yard effort over the crossbar.
San Bernardino, meanwhile, nearly won the match in the final minute of regulation when Daniel Lope broke free near the penalty spot but sent his shot well over the bar.
CSUMB will close its 2012 campaign Sunday when it hosts UC San Diego for senior day at the Otter Sports Complex. Kickoff is at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
GO OTTERS!
