THIS WEEK IN OTTER VOLLEYBALL HISTORY

The Otters earned their first victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills with a 30–25, 30–22, 30–22 sweep in The Kelp Bed on Oct. 28, 2005.

OTTER VOLLEYBALL ODDS & ENDS

CLIMBING TO 300… Sophomore OH Julia Ashen enters the week with 295 kills, moving her past Melanie Lashbrook (294 in 2011) for eighth place on the CSUMB single–season kills list. She needs five more to become just the eighth player in Otter history to reach 300 kills in a season. Brittany Etchings holds the next two spots on the list with 310 kills in 2007 and 333 kills in 2006. Rheann Fall owns the school record with 422 kills in 2010.

…WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM HER FRIEND: Julia Ashen isn't climbing up the Otter kill list on her own—she's doing it with a helping hand from sophomore setter Kelsey Johnston. With 87 assists last weekend, Johnston became just the fifth Otter to pass 700 assists in a season (704). She is averaging 9.39 assists per set (itself a CSUMB record). At her current pace, Johnston would become the first Otter to reach 1,000 assists in a season, shattering the Otter season record of 844 set by Nicki Sanderson in 2006.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TOIL AND TROUBLE: Julia Ashen recorded her seventh double–double of the season with 15 kills and 12 digs Saturday versus Sonoma State. Including her 17–kill night against San Francisco State Friday, she has reached double–figure kills in 18 of 21 matches this season, including 14 consecutive matches from Sept. 1 through Oct. 6. That school–record streak was the longest such streak since Melanie Lashbrook opened the 2011 season by reaching double figures in 13 straight (Aug. 31 – Oct. 7).

ON THE BLOCKS: Freshman middle blocker Janai Johnson continues to make her presence felt at the net. Johnson enters the week with 18 block solos in 2012, already good for the No. 3 spot on the Otter single season list. She is one behind Kimberly Sordello (19 in 2006) for the No. 2 slot. Christine Ricketts holds the CSUMB record with 29 block solos in 2006.
