San Bernardino rallies to down Otters 25-17, 25-17, 25-19

BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State San Bernardino's Coussoulis Arena traditionally has been one of the most difficult venues for the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team. That tradition continued Saturday as the Coyotes took down the Otters 25-17, 25-17, 25-19.

San Bernardino was coming off a stunning loss to Cal State East Bay — a team the Otter swept on Oct. 2 — Friday night. Sadly for Otter fans, that loss served as a wake-up call for the Coyotes, who hit an efficient .318 for the match, including a sizzling .394 in the opening set.

CSUMB (10-9, 4-7 CCAA) also played well in the first set, forcing the Coyotes to work through seven ties and four lead changes to pull out the win. After a Janai Johnson kill gave CSUMB an 1-0 lead to open the second set, however, San Bernardino took control and never trailed for the balance of the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Julia Ashen led the Otters once again with a team-high nine kills. She and junior outside hitter Rachel Freeno shared team-high honors with 10 digs apiece.

Brenna McIntosh led all attackers with 12 kills for San Bernardino (12-7, 9-2). Arielle McCullough led all defenders with 14 digs for the Coyotes.

CSUMB returns home to host San Francisco State Friday, Oct. 19 in The Kelp Bed. The Otters will be celebrating Gen Giammanco Night at the match. Please check back at www.OtterAthletics.com for more information.
