Otters Prep For Busy Week With Three Home Matches

The Otters will continue their five-match homestand Tuesday night when Cal State East Bay visits The Kelp Bed. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

CSUMB opens with East Bay on Tuesday night; Chico and Stanislaus visit this weekend

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Home sweet home. Rarely has an aphorism more suited a team and a venue more comfortably than has with the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team and the month of September. The Otters waved goodbye to a spotless 5-0 September, 2012 by dispatching Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona last weekend.

Prior to last weekend, the Otters hadn't played a home match since defeating Alaska-Anchorage on Sept. 1. They'll finish their current five-match homestand against Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus Friday and Saturday. Be sure to check back at www.OtterAthletics.com Wednesday for a preview of those matches.

PIONEER POINTS
East Bay trails CSUMB by one game in the early CCAA race, with the difference being the Otter win over Pomona on Saturday (the Pioneers lost to CPP in five Friday). OTTER VOLLEYBALL ODDS & ENDS

BE IT EVER SO HUMBLE: The Otters enjoyed their return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed after spending nearly the entire month of September on the road. CSUMB is now 5–1 at home this season.

NEVER A CLOUDY DAY: With a nod to the Earth, Wind & Fire lyrics of September, the month has been a bright one for Otter Volleyball in The Kelp Bed. CSUMB is on a 16–2 streak in September matches in The Kelp Bed dating back to the 2010 season.

SHE'S A KILLER QUEEN: Outside hitter Julia Ashen continues to climb up the national rankings in kills after another solid weekend in the sweep of Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona. Ashen moved up to  No. 16 in the nationally rankings at 4.08 kills per set. She ranks No. 2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association behind Chico's Alex Shurtz, who is No. 6 nationally at 4.50 kps.

MORE ASHEN: Julia Ashen has reached double–figure kills in 12 of 13 matches this season, including 11 consecutive matches entering the week. That's the longest such streak since Melanie Lashbrook opened the 2011 season by reaching double figures in 13 straight (Aug. 31 – Oct. 7).

GIVE THAT GIRL A HAND: Sophomore setter Kelsey Johnston continues to make her presence known in the CSUMB record books. Johnston, who set the Otter mark for assists in a four–set match with 51 in the Sept. 1 win over Alaska–Anchorage, just missed Nicki Sanderson's school record (43) for a three–set match. Johnston had 42 in Saturday's sweep of Cal Poly Pomona.
