ROCKLIN, Calif.
— The Erin Reinke era of Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer got off to a flying start as the Otters handed William Jessup a 4–1 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Jessup Field in Rocklin. It was the first collegiate coaching victory for Reinke, who took the reins at CSUMB this spring after a three–year stint as the top assistant at CCAA rival Cal Poly Pomona.

Junior midfielder Marlina Massagli (Alta Loma/Los Osos HS) led the victory march with two goals. Freshman Hannah Cobb (Hollister/San Benito HS) assisted on Massagli's first goal before scoring the eventual match–winner just minutes later.

The Otters showed tremendous grit after a sluggish start to the second half, falling behind 1–0 before exploding for four unanswered goals over the final 21 minutes to earn the win.

“Winning comes with experience, so experiences like this are very important to a young program,” says Reinke. “In that sense we're all starting new this season.”

The Otters dominated early, out–shooting the Warriors 8–3 in the first half, but had just a scoreless tie to show for it. But things slipped away early in the second half as William Jessup pressed the issued from the kickoff until Alyssa Wimmer beat Otter goalkeeper Diana Zambrano (La Puente/Mt. SAC) to a ball at the edge of the box and found Dallas Butterfield in an exposed goalmouth to give William Jessup a 1–0 lead in the 55th minute.

“I thought changing our formation and some tactical substitutions we made really increased the intensity level,” says Reinke. “But when we're playing an NCAA Tournament team like San Francisco State on Friday, the intensity has to be that high all of the time.”

Perhaps the biggest play of the game came five minutes after the William Jessup score on a goal that wasn't scored. William Jessup was continuing to press the issue when Wimmer slipped through the defense and closed in on Zambrano. This time, Zambrano came out and made a brave challenge to stone Wimmer and keep the Otters in the game.

Zambrano's save seemed to reignite the Otters, and CSUMB once again began to control the flow of the match. The long–awaited breakthrough finally came in the 69th minute when Massagli took a short feed from Cobb, danced between a pair of Warrior defenders, and beat goalkeeper Morgan Kinyon to the far post to tie the score at 1–1.

Barely 11 minutes later, Cobb did the honors, making her first collegiate goal a match–winner when Lindsay Gatlin (Chula Vista/Eastlake HS) found her at the top of the box and Cobb tucked her own effort inside the left post.

With CSUMB back in control, Massagli delivered the coup des grace less than a minute later. West Valley College transfer Lacey Atkinson closed the statline by heading in a Jen Mair (Culver City HS) corner kick with 16 seconds remaining.

CSUMB returns home to host San Francisco State Friday at the Otter Sports Complex in the CCAA opener for both teams. Doubleheader action begins with the women kicking off at 12:30 p.m. and the men starting at 3 p.m.
