LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team continued its early season form of playing well in stretches but falling just short on the road as a late UC San Diego goal denied the Otters their first road point in a 1-0 loss Friday night in La Jolla.

“This was tough loss to swallow,” said first year Head Coach Rob Cummings. “We are trying to learn how to play on the road and be consistent for 90 minutes. We got caught up in the environment and allowed the other team dictate the play.”

The Otters might have taken a bigger loss than the one-goal setback when senior goalkeeper Sam Campanelli left midway through the second half with a shoulder injury suffered in a collision. The injury knocked Campanelli from the game and his status for Sunday is uncertain. Cory Calder saw his first action of the season in relief of Campanelli and made two saves.

UCSD (5-4-0, 4-3-0 CCAA) finally broke through in the 80th minute when Alex Portola tucked his third goal of the season inside the right post. One Otter shot and two UCSD yellow cards over the final 10 minutes weren't enough to turn the tide in CSUMB's favor.

CSUMB (3-4-1, 3-3-1) heads up I-15 to face Cal State San Bernardino Sunday in a men's/women's doubleheader. The men's game kicks off at 11:30 a.m. and the women's kick off at 2 p.m.
