SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team defeated Westmont College (25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22), Saturday in the Otter Classic finale at the Kelp Bed. The Otters remain undefeated (3-0) while the Warriors drop to 1-6 overall.
“There were three things that we wanted to work on going into this weekend," said Head Coach
Jody Garry. "The first was preparation and I thought we did a good job on getting ready for Westmont. I think this team would be very competitive in the CCAA. Second is making adjustments and I thought we did that very well also. We made adjustments in game as well as forcing them to make adjustments to us. Third thing was to finish strong. We have a very experienced team and we need to play with a sense of urgency and I think we did that tonight.”
Senior
Melanie Lashbrook (Truckee/Tahoe Truckee HS) led the Otters with 13 kills and four blocks.Three Otters recorded double-digits in digs with junior
Rachel Freeno (Alta Loma/Alta Loma HS) pulling up a team-high 18. Junior
Monique Sena (Valinda/Bishop Amat Memorial HS) dished out 37 assists and Freeno nabbed four aces.
CSUMB came out and won the opening set, 25-17. Lashbrook led the way with four kills with Sena adding three kills and seven digs. The Otters closed out the set with a 10-4 run.
The Warriors answered back in the second, tying the match with a 25-19 victory. Westmont's Kayta Goyich registered a set-high five kills.
CSUMB responded with a 25-17 third-set win. Down 5-4, the Otters went on a six point spree two kills by sophomore
Lily Staight (Vista/Rancho Buena Vista HS), followed by a Fall kill and topped with three Freeno aces. CSUMB hit a match-high .333 with 13 kills while holding the Warriors to .000 attack percentage.
The fourth set remained close until the 21-19 mark when Staight put down back-to-back kills. After an attacking error by Westmont, it took CSUMB four match-point attempts before Freeno tooled the Warrior block to give CSUMB its third straight match victory.
The Otters open CCAA action on Friday, Sept. 9 at the Kelp Bed, welcoming the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m.
