Otters Comeback Falls Short

CSUMB drops four-set match to Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team fell to Cal Poly Pomona, in four-sets (25-14, 25-21, 25-27, 25-18) Saturday in Pomona, Calif. The Otters drop to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in CCAA play as the Broncos improve to 5-6 and 2-5 in conference play.

Senior outside hitter Rheann Fall recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 18 kills and 17 digs.  Senior middle hitter Melanie Lashbrook added 12 kills and six blocks. Junior outside hitter Rachel Freeno tallied 16 digs and senior middle hitter Tiffaney Riggs registered five blocks.

CSUMB dropped the opening set, 25-14.   Fall recorded a .417 attack percentage with five kills on 12 attempts and no errors.  The Otters stayed even with the Broncos until the 8-8 point when CPP went on a 10-4 run.  Six different Broncos notched kills in the set.

The Otters jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set by taking advantage of five CPP attacking errors while Fall registered three kills.  CSUMB stayed on top until a 5-2 run gave the Broncos a 25-21 victory.

CSUMB avoided the sweep, winning the third set 27-25. Fall continued to lead CSUMB with five kills in the set.  Riggs and Lashbrook each chipped in three kills.  The Otters fought off two match-points to even the set at 24-24.  Two kills by Riggs and one by Freeno clinched the win. 

The fourth set consisted of eight tied scores and six lead changes as the Broncos came out with the win, 25-18.  Lashbrook led CSUMB with four kills and senior libero Dionna Lucas added nine digs.

The Broncos were led by Ashley Marshman's 11 kills and 10 kills by Taylr Kreutziger.  CPP racked up eight aces with three coming from Lauren Jones.

The Otters battle rival Cal State East Bay on Tuesday, Sept. 27 in Hayward.  First serve is 7 p.m.
