CSUMB Falls To San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO
–  The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team fell on the road to San Francisco State, 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 29-27).   The Otters drop to 5-3 on the season and 2-3 in CCAA action while the Gators improve to 6-5 and 2-4 in conference play.

Senior middle blocker Melanie Lashbrook (Truckee/Tahoe Truckee HS) led the Otter offense with 12 kills.  Senior outside hitter Rheann Fall (Elk Grove/St. Francis HS) added 11 kills and six digs.  Fall accumulated three service aces to become the new CSUMB career record holder.  Junior outside hitter Rachel Freeno (Alta Loma/Alta Loma HS) tallied 13 digs while Lacee Ventura (Salinas/Salinas HS) chipped in three service aces. CSUMB registered eight total blocks with Lashbrook and senior middle blocker Tiffaney Riggs (Vancover, Wash./Heritage HS) nabbing three apiece.

The Gators opened the first set with a 12-5 run, but CSUMB would put together a run of its own to cut the SF State lead to 13-12 capped by a Freeno ace.   The Otters were unable to find its rhythm, dropping the first set 25-21 to the Gators.  SF State.

Fall turned on the juice in the second set, racking up seven kills on 14 attempts for a .400 attack percentage.  With 11 tied scores and six lead changes, the Gators took the second set 27-25.  CSUMB outhit SF State .268 to .263, committing only four errors. 

The Otters pulled out to an 8-3 lead to start the third as SF State committed four attack errors while Lashbrook and Fall earned a kill each and Freeno and Ventura each added a service ace. CSUMB would hold the lead until the Gators went on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 17-17.  The Otters would fight back to even the score seven times yet were unable to prevent the sweep, falling 29-27.

SF State's Halimah Oswald recorded 12 kills while Kelly Ostello added 10.

The Otters travel down to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, Sept. 24 for a 7 p.m. match against the Broncos.
