ARCATA, Calif. — A pair of underclassmen came up big for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team Friday afternoon to lead the Otters to a 1–0 win over Humboldt State at Arcata's College Creek Field.

Sophomore striker Natalie Argueta (Costa Mesa HS) scored for the Otters in the 29th minute before freshman goalkeeper Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS) stopped a penalty moments later to make that marker hold up.

“We did what we needed to do to get the win,” said Head Coach Erin Reinke after picking up her first CCAA win at the Otter helm. “We didn't play a perfect game, but the girls played hard and deserved the three points.”

Argueta took a rebound from an Andrea Davis (Chula Vista/Coronado HS) shot and chipped Humboldt goalkeeper Jennie Paugh. The Lumberjack defenders scrambled to clear the shot to no avail.

Barely two minutes later, Humboldt had a glorious chance to knot the score when a foul in the Otter box created a spot kick opportunity for the Lumberjacks. Lizzie Mitchell stepped up to take the penalty, but Gillio made the correct read and her sprawling save preserved the lead.

The Lumberjacks tried to step up the pressure in the second half, out–shooting the Otter 9–5 in the period. They managed to put just two on frame, however, as the CSUMB defense kept reserve goalkeeper Diana Zambrano (La Puente/Mt. SAC) free from danger over the final 45 minutes.

“Even though they got some shots, we defended better in the second half,” said Reinke. “I think we gained a little more confidence with today's win, but we face another good team Sunday and we're going to have to step up to get another result.”

CSUMB (2–2, 1–2 CCAA) heads south to face perennial power Sonoma State Sunday in Rohnert Park. Humboldt State (1–2–1, 0–2–1) hosts Cal State East Bay Sunday.
