Pana Vasquez led the Otters with three shots--including two on goal--Tuesday at Cal Baptist.
BOX SCORE
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team suffered its first setback of the 2011 season, dropping a 2–0 decision at Pac West Conference contender Cal Baptist Tuesday afternoon in Riverside.
Cal Baptist (2–2–0 overall) converted a penalty kick in the first half and added an insurance marker early in the second to account for the only scoring.
The teams were playing to a virtual standstill until the half hour mark, when a Lancer through ball forced Otter goalkeeper
Sam Campanelli (Palmdale/Highland HS) to come off his line to challenge. Campanelli left his feet to make the challenge, but the referee adjudged that he caught the attacker before the ball and awarded a penalty.
Willie Rupert finished the spot kick, his third goal of the season, to give the Lancers the lead and put the Otters on their heels.
“We just didn't respond after the PK,” says CSUMB Head Coach
Rob Cummings. “We didn't play with enough passion and we didn't take advantage of the opportunities we did create. The penalty was a tough call, but you've got to overcome things on the road and we're still learning that.”
The Otters (1–1–1) will get two more chances to apply that lesson this weekend as the head to the northern end of the state for a pair of CCAA contests at Humboldt State Friday (Sept. 16) and at Sonoma State Sunday (Sept. 18). They return home to host Chico State Sept. 23.
