SEASIDE, Calif. — For the second consecutive game, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team came ever so close to earning a share of the spoils, only to be thwarted by a late goal as Cal State East Bay rallied for a 2–1 win Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters grabbed a first–half lead on Gabriella Bozzo's (Salinas HS) first goal of the season in the 33rd minute. But East Bay equalized less than two and a half minutes later before grabbing all three points less than seven minutes from time.

“We didn't show up to play today,” said CSUMB Head Coach Erin Reinke. “We are learning everyday on how to be a better team. It's hard to play three games in five days for any team at the collegiate level. We will get back after it this week and get ready for Humboldt and Sonoma next weekend.”

Bozzo opened the scoreline of a back and fourth first half by taking a failed clearance at the top of the Pioneer box and blasting a shot over the head of goalkeeper Nina Cefalo. But East Bay responded quickly, knotting the score in the 35th minute when Ariana Nobrega sent a ball to the edge of edge of the Otter penalty area. Claudia Luna beat Otter keeper
Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS) to the ball and chipped it in off the far post.

East Bay picked up the tempo to open the second half and the Otters quite simply didn't match it for long stretches. Nevertheless, reserve goalkeeper Diana Zambrano (La Puente/Mt. SAC) made four save in the period to keep the score level until late.

In the 84th minute, East Bay's Shianna Falk swung a corner kick into the goalmouth and Kathleen Brawley headed home her first of the season for what proved to be the match winner.

CSUMB (1–2 overall, 0–2 CCAA) will look to regroup on the road when its heads north for a pair of CCAA matches next weekend. The Otters will play at Humboldt State Friday (Sept. 16) and at Sonoma State Sunday (Sept. 18). They return home to host Chico State Friday (Sept. 23).

Cal State East Bay evened its records at 2–2 overall and 1–1 in conference play.
