SEASIDE, Calif. – The Otter defense came up big Saturday night as the Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team defeated Cal State L.A., 3-1 in CCAA action at the Kelp Bed. Set scores were 19-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 as the Otters improved to 5-0, while the Golden Eagles, 4-2, suffered their second loss of the season.
As a team, the Otters posted 77 digs with four players achieving double-digits, to 61 digs by CSULA.   Three Otters recorded double-doubles in the match with seniors 
Rheann Fall (Elk Grove/St. Francis HS) and 
Monique Sena (Valinda/Bishop Amat Memorial HS) each notched their third of the season. Fall had a match-high 22 digs along with her 16 kills and .310 attack percentage.  Sena finished with 43 assists and 14 digs while junior 
Rachel Freeno (Alta Loma,/Alta Loma HS) added 12 kills and 15 digs.  Senior 
Melanie Lashbrook (Truckee/Tahoe Truckee HS) set a four-set career-high with 18 kills. Freshman 
Julia Ashen (Salinas/Salinas North) had a career-high 10 kills.
CSUMB dropped the opening set 25-19 after having a season-high nine errors on 44 attempts and 16 kills.  Lashbrook led all hitters with eight kills and Fall had nine digs.   CSULA's Samantha Potter finished with four kills on 15 attempts and no errors.
The Otters used a 12-3 run in the second to break away from CSULA to even the sets at one apiece.  CSUMB hit .243 with 16 kills while limiting the Golden Eagles to six kills on 32 attempts and six errors for a .000 attack percentage. 
In the third set, the Otters came out and dominated by taking an early 9-2 lead which led to a 25-15 win.  The Otters hit a match-best .375 with only three errors. 
The Otters avoided a fifth set by winning the fourth, 25-20.  With 11 tie scores and five lead changes in the set, CSUMB rallied with a 6-2 run to make it 20-16, but the Golden Eagles cut the gap to two on Reanna Hill's kill at 21-19.  A service ace by 
Lacee Ventura (Salinas/Salinas High) nabbed the victory for CSUMB.
CSUMB hosts Sonoma State and Humboldt State next weekend. The Otters-Seawolves match-up is on Friday, Sept 16 with the Lumberjacks coming to town on Saturday, Sept. 17.  Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
