Otters Open Series With Win Over SF State, 3-2

 March 11, 2011

SEASIDE, Calif.-
The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team nabbed its fourth California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory this season with a 3-2 win over the San Francisco State Gators in the series opener on Friday afternoon.

In the top of the first, the Otters got off to a slow start with two walks and a hit-by-pitch that eventually lead to the first run of the game for the Gators.

SF State came out with a promising start in the second as the Gators had a sharp lead-off single up the middle off the bat of junior Andrew Suvunnachuen. Junior Ian Fregosi followed with a single to right field placing runners on the corners. Even with the hit-and-run in place, the Otters came out unharmed, turning the second double play of the day.

Junior left fielder #Jared DeCastro# lead off the second with a single through the left side.  Sophomore #Alex Mangubat# singled to left field for the second CSUMB base runner of the inning. On a 3-2 pitch, sophomore #Tommy George# singled to second bringing DeCastro around to score. With Mangubat on third, sophomore catcher #Tyler Young# hit a RBI fly ball to left field for the second run of the inning for the Otters.

The Gators added a lone run in the top of the fourth. The rally started off the bat of junior Nic Gauldin with a single to left field. Suvunnachuen singled to left field for the RBI.

CSUMB answered back in the fourth inning, once again off the bat of DeCastro with a swift single to left. He found his way to second quickly with the steal. George singled to right field for the RBI and to ensure the Otter lead.

Each team played strong defense, turning several double plays a piece.

On the day, DeCastro went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. George had a strong showing at the plate for the Otters, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Senior right-handed pitcher #Scott Tully# pitched seven complete innings and picked up the win to improve to 2-1.

The two CCAA rivals will face off again Saturday, March 12, at San Francisco State for the doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
