SEASIDE, Calif. - Seniors #Julie Heurung# and #London Houchin# combined for 27 points to lead the No. 24 Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team to a 75-54 victory over Humboldt State on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Kelp Bed.
The Otters improve to 22-2 overall and 18-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play while the Lumbrerjacks drop to 13-11, 10-10 in conference action. With Cal Poly Pomona's 83-80 loss to Cal State Stanislaus tonight, the Otter move into first place in the CCAA standings with a half-a-game lead over the Broncos.
Heurung was one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds on top of her 12 points. Houchin had a team-high 15 points with 12 coming in the second half. Sophomore #Holly Holcomb# also was one shy of a double-double, ending with nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore #Jessica Fontenette# racked up a career-high 11 points.
The Otters trailed the Lumberjacks 28-27 at the break.
A 21-7 run put CSUMB up 49-36 with 11:41 remaining on the clock. The Otters kept a double-digit gap for the rest of the game.
The Otters shot an impressive 51.9 percent in the second half. CSUMB's No. 1 nationally ranked defense held HSU to only 31.3 percent
The Otters won the battle of the boards, finishing with a 39-28 advantage over the Jacks.
CSUMB concludes the regular season with its final series at home, hosting Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus on Thursday, Feb. 24 and Friday, Feb. 25 respectively.
