SEASIDE, Calif. – After celebrating the six graduating seniors on the 2011 Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball squad, the team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to the Chico State Wildcats on Saturday at the Kelp Bed. The final scores were 25-19, 18-25, 24-26, 27-25 and 15-12.

Rheann Fall was outstanding. We fell short in finishing the fourth set and that was hard but we kept fighting in the fifth set. We are playing really well right now. One weekend left to finish strong.”
Senior
Rheann Fall (Elk Grove/St. Francis HS) registered her 14th double-double of the season, her 53rd of her career, with 23 kills and 19 digs. Four other Otters recorded double-digits in digs with sophomore
Lacee Ventura (Salinas/Salinas High) leading the way with a career-high 20 digs. Senior
Monique Sena tallied her 13th double-double (24 assists, 13 digs) while freshman
Kelsey Johnston (Ripon/Ripon HS) nabbed her first collegiate double-double (20 assists, 13 digs). Senior
Melanie Lashbrook (Truckee/Tahoe Truckee) finished with 13 kills and nine blocks. With a total of 10 aces from five different Otters led by Johnston's four.
CSUMB dropped the opening set, 25-19. The Otters kept it close , with seven lead changes and 10 tied scores, until the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to clinch the win. Chico State recorded 15 kills to the CSUMB's nine. Senior
Lauren Shacklock led the Otters with three kills.
The teams flip-flopped in the second set with the Otters coming on strong to end the set with a 6-1 run to win 25-18 and tie the match at one set apiece. Fall led all hitters with eight kills for a .412 clip. The Otters outhit the Wildcats, .351 to .211. CSUMB also tallied five aces.
After trailing throughout most of the third set and evening the score nine different times, the Otters took the their first lead of the set at 25-24 on a Lashbrook kill. The blocking duo of Lashbrook and Ventura clinched the set at 26-24. Fall and freshman
Julia Ashen (Salinas/North Salinas HS) each registered four kills while Lucas finished with eight digs.
The Otters opened the fourth set with a 10-4 lead capped by a Johnston ace. Chico State battled back to knot the score at 21 apiece. A Wildcat missed serve and Johnston's fourth ace of the night tied the game at 24-24. The Otters had match-point after a Wildcat hitting error but Chico State's Lindsay Quigley's kill tied it once again. A block and an ace gave the Wildcats a 27-25 win and took the match to a fifth set.
Chico State pulled out to a 10-7 lead in the fifth set. CSUMB kept its composure, cutting the lead to 13-11 on a block by Lashbrook and Shacklock. The Wildcats pushed on to clinch the set and match with a 15-12 win.
The Wildcats were led by Makenzie Snyder's 25 kills and Jessica Leek's 17 kills. Chico State registered 112 digs with Jessica Simms having a match-high 23.
CSUMB concludes their 2012 season on the road against two national ranked teams. The Otters face No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, Nov. 11 and No. 17 UC San Diego on Saturday, Nov. 12.
