SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team concluded the first half of CCAA season on Saturday, falling to No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino in three sets, 25-12, 25-17, 25-21.
“I was very impressed with how the team stayed together and kept fighting,” said Head Coach
Jody Garry. “Once we got control of their serve, we did the little things to be successful. I am proud of the team and look forward to the battle of the second half of the CCAA.”
The Otters drop to 6-8 overall and 3-8 in CCAA action while the Coyotes remain undefeated with a 15-0 record, 11-0 in conference play.
Senior
Melanie Lashbrook (Truckee/Tahoe Truckee) registered a team-high five kills and five blocks. Senior outside hitter
Rheann Fall (Elk Grove/St. Francis HS) chipped in four kills and 10 digs.
The Otters out blocked the Coyotes, with CSUMB recording seven blocks to CSUSB's five.
CSUMB had a slow start as the Coyotes sailed to a 25-12 win in the opening set. Lashbrook and Fall each notched two kills. CSUSB's Priscilla Collings led all hitters with six kills.
The Otters came out ready to rumble in the second set, trading leads six times until the 10-10 mark. Four uncontested points gave the Coyotes the momentum to roll to a 25-17 win.
After the 10-minute break, the Otters jumped out to an 8-1 lead capped by Fall's solo block against All-American Samantha MIddleborn. The Coyotes rallied back to knot the score at 12. CSUMB regained the lead on senior
Lauren Shacklock's kill followed with a kill by junior
Rachel Freeno to put the Otters up 14-12. The Coyotes would not go away quietly as they went on a 5-2 run. CSUSB would eventually pull off the sweep with a 25-21 third set victory.
Middleborn led the Coyotes with 13 kills and three aces while Collings added 10 kills.
The Otters kickoff the second half of the conference season on the road, taking on the Eagles of Cal State L.A. on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
