SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team gave one of its best efforts of the season Friday afternoon, but Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Sarah Rohman denied them the elusive goal as the Broncos held on for a 1–0 victory at the Otter Sports Complex.

“Coach (Austin) Risenhoover and I are happy the team's performance today,” says CSUMB Head Coach Erin Reinke. “Of course, with the effort we gave, the team would have liked to walk away with a win, but the important thing is that we competed for 90 minutes today. If we can play like this every game, we give ourselves a chance to win games.”

Pomona (6–2–3, 4–2–3 CCAA) came into the match ranked No. 8 in the latest NSCAA West Region rankings, but it was CSUMB (2–8–0, 1–8–0) that had the better of play and possession early. Nevertheless, Pomona got the only goal of the game against the run of play in the 17th minute when Jennifer Rivera took advantage of a miscue in the Otter box and poked a turnover home off a scramble to give the Broncos the early lead.

Neither goalkeeper faced much trouble in the first half, but both came up with some big saves in an entertaining second stanza. Otter freshman Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS) made the first big stop, stoning Valerie Strawn in the 57th minute. Gillio kept the Otters in the game later in the half, denying Allison Sauve a sure score in the 80th minute.

But Rohman made the biggest stop of the day, punching a wicked effort by Marlina Massagli (Alta Loma/Los Osos HS) over the crossbar four minutes from time to deny CSUMB a coveted equalizer.

CSUMB returns to action Sunday, heading to Hayward to tackle Cal State East Bay. The Otters return home to host Sonoma State Friday, Oct. 14, in a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
