SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team went toe–to–toe with one of the nation's top programs, doing everything necessary to outplay No. 19 Cal State L.A. except score the elusive goal in a 1–0 defeat Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB out–possessed and out shot Cal State L.A., but the effort came for naught when a breakdown in the backline allowed a Melissa Pickett flick to send Gabbi Segall along on goal in the 37th minute. Otter freshman goalkeeper
Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS) made a valiant challenge, but Segall slipped the ball past her from 10 yards out for what proved to be the match–winner.
“The team played well today.We are so close to being a top team in the CCAA,” says CSUMB Head Coach
Erin Reinke. “We out shot one of the best teams in the nation, but we lack on finishing.
“We are getting stronger as a team. The team is looking to end on a high note on Sunday against Dominguez Hills.”
The Otters had a pair of intriguing chances when Cal State L.A. fouls twice sent them up with nearly straight on free kicks inside 25 yards. But
Andrea Davis (Chula Vista/Coronado HS) and
Sherene Thompson (Gold River/Rio Americano HS) sent well struck free kicks over the crossbar.
Gillio played another solid game in goal, making six stops in addition to several brave challenges throughout the match. Freshman halfback
Cheryl Tom (Cupertino/Monta Vista HS) also gave a solid performance patrolling the left touchline for all 90 minutes.
CSUMB (3–13–0, 2–13–0 CCAA) closes out the 2011 season with senior day Sunday, Oct. 19 when it hosts CCAA contender Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opener of a men's/women's doubleheader. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
