SEASIDE, Calif. —  One goal that was beat two goals that weren't as visiting Cal State L.A. scored in the final minute of overtime to pull out a 2–1 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Cal State Monterey Bay appeared to net the match winner in the 99th minute when Servando Perez (Guadalupe/Allan Hancock JC) ran on to a through ball and beat Golden Eagle goalkeeper Waleed Cassis. But Perez was adjudged narrowly offside in a call unpopular with the home side. Less than half a minute later, a lightning quick build up found Jason Swope unmarked in the CSUMB box and the Golden Eagle striker slipped one through in the 100th minute to grab all three points.

“It was great to be a part of a game like this,” said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings. “It was unlucky that we didn't get the result but I thought both teams deserved to win today.”

Overtime might not have been necessary if not for another disallowed goal that haunted the Otters. Late in the first half with Cal State L.A. up 1–0, Cassis went up in traffic to snag a cross on the goalline. He appeared to juggle the ball as Max Brixey (Truckee HS) barrelled in and bull–rushed the ball home. But Brixey was whistled for a foul on the play, negating the score.

Cal State L.A. opened the scoring in the 16th minute when a long Derek Faulkner cross skipped past a half dozen players in the Otter box before Nicolas Assad finally corralled the ball and netted his second of the season.

While the Golden Eagles were dangerous going forward all afternoon, they were a bit susceptible in back and the Otters took advantage by creating several scoring opportunities. CSUMB finally broke through on the hour, and Brixey was once again a central figure in the proceedings.

George Plakorus (Columbia, Mo./Hickman HS) sent a far post cross that Brixey controlled before making a brilliant back flick to the middle of the box. Jon Decker (Simi Valley/Royal HS) came flying in to head home the flick for his first goal of the season.

“We've talked all season about this being a learning process, so I'm happy the players got to experience a playoff like atmosphere with L.A. playing for an NCAA invite,” said Cummings. “Sunday against Cal State Dominguez Hills will be the same type of environments and on top of that we will be honoring our five seniors.”
