CHICO, Calif. — For the second time in seven days, a penalty kick did in the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team. Last Sunday, Humboldt State squeaked out a 1–0 win thanks to a late penalty. This time, Chico State converted from the spot in the first half and made that goal stand up in a 1–0 Wildcat victory at Chico's University Soccer Stadium.

The Wildcats earned their penalty opportunity in the 14th minute when Megan Tabler took a pass just inside the box and was adjudged to have been taken down from behind. Carly Singer stepped up and put the spot kick in for what would prove to be the only goal of the match.

“The team showed great character and worked really hard,” said Head Coach Erin Reinke. “We have grown a lot as a team this week and will be ready to take on Cal State L.A. and Dominguez Hills next week at home.”

Aside from the penalty, neither team asked many questions of the opposing goalkeeper, combining to put just four of their 17 shots on frame. CSUMB freshman Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS) faced just one challenge aside from the penalty while Chico's Brianna Furner stopped both efforts the Otters put on target.

Junior midfielder Andrea Davis (San Diego/Coronado HS) had three of CSUMB's six shots Sunday. Marlina Massagli (Alta Loma/Los Osos HS) and Cheryl Tom (Cupertino/Monta Vista HS) accounted for the two shots on goal.

CSUMB returns to the Otter Sports Complex for its final two contests of 2011. The Otters take on Cal State L.A. Friday (Oct. 28) at 3 p.m. and Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday (Oct. 30) at 11:30 a.m. Both matches will be part of men's/women's doubleheader action.
