Volleyball Game Notes No. 7

THIS WEEK:
The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team makes the long trip north to Arcata on Friday, Oct. 21 to take on the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State. On Saturday, Oct. 22, the Otters travel to Rohnert Park for a match-up against No. 24 Sonoma State. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
 
LOOKING AHEAD: The Otters return to the Kelp Bed on Friday, Oct. 28 to host Cal Poly Pomona before facing the Gators of San Francisco State on Saturday, Oct. 29. Both games start at 7 p.m.  
 
THOUGHTS FROM COACH GARRY: “The team is hungry to get a second chance at our conference opponents. As tough as a road trip this weekend is, we are ready to focus on the little things that will help us to be successful.”
 
RECORD BREAKING SEASON: In a span of only one week, senior All-American outside hitter Rheann Fall became the CSUMB career record holder in two categories, kills (1,300) and aces (126). Senior middle hitter Tiffaney Riggs has started her own countdown to breaking a record.  She is only 34 block assists away from becoming the new CSUMB block assist career record holder.
 
CCAA LEADERS: Fall remains on top of the CCAA kill category with a 4.14 kills per set average against conference teams.   Senior middle hitter Melanie Lashbrook jumps up one spot to sixth with a 3.61 kills per set average. Senior libero Dionna Lucas drops down to the fifth spot in digs, averging 4.50 per set. The team continues to hold steady in the second spot with a 17.96 digs per set average.  
 
SCOUTING HUMBOLDT STATE: The Lumberjacks (6-11, 3-10 CCAA) pulled off a huge upset last Friday with a five-set thriller at Chico State who is ranked third in the conference standings. Humboldt State followed with a five-set loss to Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday in Turlock.  Top Players: Oceana Matsubu (4.13 kills per set, 21 aces) and Allison Drobish (72 blocks).
 
SCOUTING SONOMA STATE: The Seawolves (15-3, 12-1 CCAA) have won 14 of their last 15 matches, with their only loss coming from the No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Friday, Sept. 30. Sonoma State is ranked 15th among NCAA Division II schools in hitting percentage (.274). Top Players: Keala Peterson (3.29 kills per set, 156 digs), Allison Sather (3.41 kills per set, ) and Kelsey Hull (.349 hitting percentage).

LAST MEETING AGAINST HSU & SSU: The Otters dropped back-to-back four-set decisions to the Seawolves and Lumberjacks the weekend of Sept 16-17 at the Kelp Bed.
