SEASIDE, Calif. — For the second consecutive meeting, a penalty kick played a pivotal role in the Humboldt State–Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer series. Sunday afternoon, Humboldt converted a late spot kick opportunity to ease past CSUMB 1–0 at the Otter Sports Complex.
The match was even through the first 74 minutes until momentum swung to Humboldt's side in the 75th. Forward Liz Christensen, who had a been a thorn in the side of the Otter backline all afternoon, ran on to a through ball in the upper right corner of the CSUMB penalty area. Otter freshman goalkeeper
Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS), who played courageously for 90 minutes, came out to challenge but clipped Christensen in the process.
When the teams met in Arcata on Sept. 16, Gillio saved a Lumberjack penalty to preserve a 1–0 Otter victory. This time, however, Tamra James buried her opportunity from the spot to earn all three points for Humboldt.
Although the teams posted 12 shots each, neither offense asked many questions of its opposing goalkeeper. When they did, Gillio and Lumberjack freshman Amber Woolcock were ready with the answers.
Christensen had a golden opportunity to put Humboldt in front 20 minutes into the second half when a darting run put her in on goal. Gillio challenged aggressively, however, and forced Christensen to shoot over the cross bar from 18 yards.
The Otters' best chance to score came soon thereafter when a scramble put
A.J. Cibulsky (Cameron Park/Ponderosa HS) one–on–one with Woolcock. This time, the Humboldt keeper was equal to the task, stoning the Otter sophomore from point blank range to keep the match scoreless at that point.
CSUMB (2–11–0, 1–11–0 CCAA) will look to bounce back into the win column next weekend when it travels to play at Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State. The Otters return home to close out the season Oct. 28–30 against Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Humboldt State (2–9–2, 1–9–2) continues its four–match road trip Friday at UC San Diego.
