SEASIDE, Calif. — CCAA North Division leader Sonoma State rode a strong first half effort to a 2–0 win over host Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Sonoma (7–5–1, 7–3–1 CCAA) struck early when Ashley Martin shook her defender to head home a Sara Studer corner kick in the eighth minute. The Seawolves added an insurance goal four minutes before the interval when a pair of Otter defenders couldn't clean up another Sonoma corner, leaving the ball on the doorstep for Macy Usher to tap in her second goal of the season.

The opening minutes of the second half began much like the first. This time, however Otter freshman goalkeeper Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS), who came on in relief to start the second half, absolutely robbed Megan Cunningham from point blank range early in the half to keep the Otters alive. While the Otter offense didn't break through, the team did play more inspired soccer from that point forward.

“The team did well in the second half by not letting them get another goal,” said first year CSUMB Head Coach Erin Reinke. “We accomplished a small victory. Our work rate was very good in the second half. It needs to carry over on Sunday against Humboldt.”

Junior forward Marlina Massagli (Alta Loma/Los Osos HS) led the CSUMB offense with two shots. Gillio and starter Diana Zambrano (La Puente/Mt. SAC) even split 12 saves, the highest team total of the season.

CSUMB (2–10–0, 1–10–0) returns to action Sunday afternoon, hosting Humboldt State in the feature match of a men's/women's doubleheader. The women's match kicks off at 2 p.m.
