SEASIDE, Calif. — One play early in the game proved just enough to mar an otherwise solid performance by the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team in a 1–0 loss to Sonoma State Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Credit Sonoma State for creating that play, however, as some nifty prep work from Trevor Hurst and Nico Spann allowed Taylor Varnadore to score his 10th goal of the season from point blank range in the sixth minute.

The match's first 10 minutes belonged to Sonoma State, but after that, the Otters dug in and played Sonoma on more than equal footing. Following the opening Seawolf salvo, CSUMB out–shot and out–possessed Sonoma for much of the balance of the match.

“I was very happy with the effort today and I thought we had the better of play for good portions of the match,” said first year CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings. “We didn't get the result today, but we were able to do a lot of the things we wanted to do and ask some tough questions of a very talented offensive team.”

After the goal, both keepers did a good job of marshalling their defenses to prevent much danger. CSUMB's Cory Calder (South Lake Tahoe/Cabrillo JC) and Sonoma's Taylor Jones each made just two saves, including none in a second half that saw Sonoma's normally aggressive offense attack primarily on the counter as the Otter pressed forward looking for the equalizer.

CSUMB's best chance came in the waning seconds of regulation when a foul and yellow card just outside the upper left corner of the penalty area set the Otters up with a dangerous set piece opportunity. Junior midfielder Max Brixey (Truckee HS) saw an opening on the backside of the Seawolf defense, but his free kick slipped just beyond the reach of sophomore forward Servando Perez (Guadalupe/Hancock JC) allowing Sonoma to escape with the win.

CSUMB will look to bounce back Sunday when it hosts Humboldt State in the opening match of the men's/women's doubleheader. The men kickoff at 11:30 a.m.
