MB Volleyball takes to the road to start second half of CCAA action

Volleyball Game Notes No. 6

THIS WEEK:
The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team begins the second half of CCAA play on the road, traveling to Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The Otters will face the Golden Eagles in Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 14 and the Toros in Carson on Saturday, Oct. 15.  Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Otters remain on the road for another week, traveling to Arcata to play Humboldt State on Friday, Oct. 21 and then on to Rhonert Park for a match-up against Sonoma State on Saturday, Oct. 22.  Both games begin at 7 p.m.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH GARRY: “We are looking forward to the opportunity to get a second chance to play our best against all the tough teams in our conference, One of the specific goals we set this year was how we were going to compete in the second half. The second half of conference in the CCAA has everything to do with the commitment we made in spring and summer, and our continued ability to stay present as 'the grind' occurs (school, health, fitness). It also has everything to do with how we prepare. We have found our way back into playing better volleyball and I am confident this team is going to step up to the challenges set before them.”

RECORD BREAKING SEASON: In a span of only one week, Senior Rheann Fall became the CSUMB career record holder in two categories, kills (1,300) and aces (126). Senior middle hitter Tiffaney Riggs has started her own countdown to breaking a record.  She is only 36 block assists away from becoming the new CSUMB block assist career record holder.

CCAA LEADERS: Fall continues to lead the CCAA with 4.10 kills per set against conference teams.   Senior middle hitter Melanie Lashbrook drops down to seventh with a 3.57 kills per set average. Senior libero Dionna Lucas is in the third spot in digs, averging 4.76 per set. The team is ranked second with a 18.48 digs per set average.

SCOUTING CAL STATE L.A.: The Golden Eagles' (7-9, 4-7 CCAA) lone win in their last four matches was a sweep over Cal State Stanislaus last Friday.  In their CCAA opening weekend, the Otters recorded a four-set victory (19-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20) over CSULA at the Kelp Bed. Top Players: Marquis Mora (235 kills, 64 blocks, 24 aces), Natalia Gonzalez (146 kills)

SCOUTING CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS: The Toros (1-14, 0-11 CCAA) continue searching for their first CCAA victory, having only won four sets with the latest against Cal State Stanislaus last Saturday. Top Players: Elizabeth Krieger (157 kills, 154 digs), Delea Pursel (84 kills, 35 blocks).
