Otters Win Fifth Series Of The Season

CSUMB splits doubleheader against San Francisco State

SEASIDE, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team clinched the series victory against San Francisco State with a 9-1 five-inning win over the Gators in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Otters fell, 5-4, to the Gators in the opener that went nine-innings.

CSUMB is now 24-12 overall and 17-7 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action while SF State ends the weekend 15-20, 10-10 in conference play.

“I am very pleased with our weekend,” said head coach #Andrea Kenney#. “We hit the ball well, Niki Ames was phenomenal at the plate.”

Senior #Niki Ames# went 4-for-8 today with a home run, three runs scored and driving in three. Juniors #Cat Sampson# and #Nicole Garcia# each recorded a triple today.
The Otters travel to Carson next weekend for a four-game series against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Junior #Channing Peebles# hit a 3 RBI double to give the Otters a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

The Gators made it 3-1 in their next at bat on a single by Kelsey Wood, scoring Kylie Herrada.

In the top of the sixth, SF State scored three runs on two hits and a CSUMB error to take a 4-3 lead.

Ames hit her third home run of the season to tie the game up 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

SF State broke the tie in the top of the ninth inning.  Lea Cardenas doubled to right center to score Heather Jenson.

Ortiz threw all nine-innings for the Otters, striking out 10 batters and allowing five runs with only four earned runs.

SF State jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a bases loaded walk in the second inning.

The Otters answered with a big third inning, scoring six runs off six hits.  Sampson led off with a triple to right center and crossed the plate on freshman #Angelina Orozco#'s single.  Senior #Jenny Montez# followed with a ground-ruled double to center. Sophomore #Jamie Moon#'s single to score Orozco and then stole second.  Junior #Shae Olds# drew a walk to load the bases.  Ames singled to advance all the runners 60 feet and Ortiz, in the designated player spot, grounded out to drive in Moon.  Pinch hitter Garcia hit a stand-up triple to center field to score the final two runs of the game, making it 6-1 CSUMB.

CSUMB added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Ortiz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, 7-1.

In the fifth inning, Sampson led off with a single through the left side. Pinch hitter #Shannon Bailey# drew a full-count walk. Both runners advanced when Orozco laid down a sacrifice bunt down the first base line. Montez singled through the left side to score Sampson.  Moon reached first on an error to load the bases with one out.  Olds popped up to first for the second out.  On the second pitch she faced, Ames hit the ball off the left center wall to score the final run.

Sophomore #Jessica Moon# got her sixth win of the season, tallying three strikeouts and giving up just one run in the five innings.
