SOFTBALL
UPCOMING GAMES: CSUMB hosts University of Hawai'i Hilo and Western Washington University on Tuesday for a pair of non-conference games. Later in the week, the Otters travel to Turlock for the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. The Otters open up against Central Washington on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a match-up against Northwest Nazarene at 8:15 p.m. The next day, CSUMB squares off with Western Oregon at 12:15 and then Montana State Billings at 3:45 p.m. Sunday will be the bracket play.
PREVIOUS WEEKEND: CSUMB won 3-1 series over Humboldt State this past weekend at the Otter Softball Field. The Otters swept the Lumberjacks, 1-0 and 5-2, on Friday, March 19. The following day, CSUMB won the opener 3-2 before falling in the closer, 3-0.
CCAA WEEKLY HONOR: Right-hander #Diane Ortiz# has been named the Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 15-21, it was announced on Monday. It marks the second time this season she has been honored. Ortiz, a junior from Pomona, Calif., went 2-0 with a save and 0.61 ERA in three games against Humboldt State. In 14 2/3 innings, the Otters' right-hander scattered eight hits, allowed two runs (one earned), walked five and struck out seven in helping Cal State Monterey Bay to its first-ever series sweep of Humboldt State.
CCAA STAT RANKINGS: #Shae Olds# - 4th in home runs (5) and 5th in RBI (17). #Jamie Moon# - 2nd sacrifice bunts (10). #Cat Sampson# - 4th in doubles (7). #Jenny Montez# - 5th in runs scored (19), 2nd in triples (2), 1st in walks (19) and 9th in on base percentage (.452). #Jamie Moon# - 2nd in sacrifice bunts (10). #Diane Ortiz# - 3rd in ERA (1.54), 1st in opposing average (.188), 10th in batters struck out (49), 4th in batters struck out looking (25), 5th in wins (7) and 8th in lowest number of runs allowed (23). #Jessica Moon# - 6th in ERA (2.26), 1st in lowest number of runs allowed (10)
NCAA RANKINGS: In the NFCA 4th season poll, CSUMB is ranked 27th in the nation. The Otters dropped out of the Top 25 after the 1-3 series at Sonoma State two weekends ago.
THE VULCANS: Hawai'i Hilo (21-8, 17-7 Pac-West) split a four-game series with Dixie State last weekend, winning the two middle games 7-5 and 9-7 but fell in the opener 11-3 and closer 9-0. Players to Watch: Sierra Green (.478 BA, 44 H, 25 R, 7 2B, 9 RBI, 9 SB); Alisha Sueda (.393 BA, 33 H, 13 R, 11 RBI)
THE VIKINGS: Western Washington (8-8, 8-8 GNAC) pulled off a 3-1 series victory over Saint Martin's in Lacey, Wash. this past weekend. Players to Watch: Jessica Carey (.429 BA, 18 H, 11 R, 4 RBI); Stephanie Fox (.375 BA, 15 H, 6 R).
BASEBALL
UPCOMING GAMES: The Otters kickoff a four-game conference series against Cal State Stanislaus on Friday in Turlock before returning to the Otter Baseball Field on Saturday for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. The Otters-Warriors series finale is on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Turlock.
PREVIOUS WEEKEND: The Otters dropped a 3-1 series at Sonoma State this past weekend, pulling off a 14-13 victory in the series finale. Sophomore #Jason Okamoto# hit CSUMB's second grand slam of the season and went 3-for-4 in the game. #Scott Tully# picked up his second win of the season, pitching five complete inning and giving up two hits while striking out eight.
THE WARRIORS: Cal State Stanislaus (11-14, 7-9 CCAA) nabbed one victory in the four-game series against No. 9 Chico State this past weekend. Players to Watch: Andrew Graves (.359 BA, 23 H, 13 R, 11 RBI); Corey Conflenti (.344 BA, 33 H, 21 R, 27 RBI, 12 2B, 4 HR)
