SOFTBALL
UPCOMING GAMES: No. 18 CSUMB is set for its fifth CCAA series of 2010, hosting Humboldt State this weekend. The Otters will open the series against the Lumberjacks in a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a pair of games on Saturday to start at 11 a.m.
COACH KENNEY'S CORNER: “HSU is a program the deserves the utmost respect of their opponents. We will approach this weekend knowing we have to show up with our “A” game to win.”
PREVIOUS WEEKEND: CSUMB dropped its first series of the season at Sonoma State this past weekend
CCAA STAT RANKINGS: #Shae Olds# - 4th in home runs (5) and 5th in RBI (16). #Jamie Moon# - 2nd sacrifice bunts (10). #Cat Sampson# - 3rd in doubles (7). #Jenny Montez# - 2nd in runs scored (18) and 3rd in walks (14). #Nicole Garcia# - 6th in walks (12) and 2nd in sacrifice flies (2).
NCAA RANKINGS: In the NFCA 3rd season poll, CSUMB is ranked 18th in the nation. This is the first time a sport besides golf has appeared in the national polls.
CCAA PRESEASON POLL: CSUMB has been tabbed to repeat as the CCAA tournament champions following a vote of league coaches. The Otters are picked to finish second in the regular season behind Humboldt State.
THE LUMBERJACKS: Humboldt State (11-11, 4-8 CCAA) is eighth in the CCAA standings and split a four-game series with Chico State last weekend. Players to Watch: Chrissy Stalf (.397 BA, 25 H, 11 R, 6 2B, 2 HR, 11 RBI); Giavanna Hampton (.386 BA, 17 H, 5 R).
BASEBALL
UPCOMING GAMES: The Otters travel to Rohnert Park for a four-game series against Sonoma State this weekend. CSUMB begins the series on Friday, March 19 at 3 p.m.
PREVIOUS WEEKEND: CSUMB was swept by the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles last weekend at the Otter Baseball Field. The Otters opened the series with a 3-2 loss before falling 17-7 in the nightcap. On Sunday, CSUMB challenged the Eagles but came up shy with 5-4 and 6-3 losses.
HOT AT THE PLATE: Sophomore #Jordan Porcella-Smeds# hit his first collegiate home run, a grand slam on Saturday. In Sunday's nightcap, Porcella-Smeds followed crushed two homers to finish the series with a .700 batting average (7-for-10).
THE SEAWOLVES: Sonoma State (9-13, 2-10 CCAA) was swept by No. 2 UC San Diego last weekend. Players to Watch: Kyle Jones (.372 BA, 29 H, 14 R, 4 HR, 16 RBI); Max Shupe (.365 BA, 27 H, 15 R, 8 2B, 6 HR, 21 RBI).
WOMEN'S WATER POLO
UPCOMING GAMES: CSUMB competes in a one-day tournament at University of the Pacific on Saturday, March 20. The Otters play UC Santa Cruz at 2:50 p.m., followed by a match-up against Harvard at 5:10 p.m.
COACH FIGUEROA'S CORNER: “Our team is continuing to grow together and improve. We are now winning 50% of our games and we would like to improve on that throughout the rest of the season. #Heather Penna# continues to provide steady play on both ends of the pool and #Sarah Ford# is doing an outstanding job in goal. Our seniors are really stepping up”
PREVIOUS WEEKEND: The Otters fell 15-4 to the No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers before crushing Macalester College, 16-6, in the second game. Senior #Heather Penna#, junior #Janelle Romano# and sophomore #Alyssa Pecora# led the Otters with three goals on the day.
