HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team dropped a 7-5 decision to Cal State East Bay in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon in Hayward.
Senior #Jacob Flores# led the Otters, going 3-for-5 with two doubles. Senior #Brent Sargenti# and freshman #Nolan Murray# each went 2-for-3. Murray drove in two runs for the Otters.
The Pioneers got the scoring started in the first inning with three runs off a double and three singles.
The Otters answered a half an inning later by tying the game at 3-3. Sophomore #Jordan Porcella-Smeds# drew a walk and advanced to third on a single by sophomore #Niko Kanakaris#. Sargenti's single scored Kanakaris. A double by Murray brought both Sargenti and Kanakaris across the plate for the final two runs of the inning.
CSUEB retook the lead in the bottom of the second on a triple by Alex Anicich, 4-3 Pioneers.
The Otters weren't going away quietly, tying the game once again in the very next inning. Porcella-Smeds's double scored senior #Ryan Chagonjian# after getting on with a walk.
The Pioneer went on top for good in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on three hits.
After CSUEB added another run in the sixth, the Otters attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh. With one out, Flores hit his second double of the day and junior red-shirt
Peter Estes followed with a single. Chagonjian hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Flores but Estes was called out at second base.
The Pioneers' Josewski was perfect at the plate, racking up four hits along with three RBI. Anicich went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
The Otters (1-4) open conference play on Friday, Feb. 12, hosting Cal State San Bernardino at the Otter Baseball Field. First pitch is 2 p.m.
