SAN FRANCISCO – Playing its second match of the day at the California Clash Invitational, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Notre Dame de Namur tonight, 25-17, 19-25, 25-16, 25-15. The Otters swept Dominican University of California earlier in the day, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18.
CSUMB falls to 4-3 on the year, while the Argonauts improved to 2-6 overall.
#Rheann Fall# notched a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. #Lauren Shacklock# added 10 kills, with #Lauren Manzo# dishing out 20 assists.
The first set began with both teams trading leads until the 8-8 mark when NDNU rattled off four straight and forcing a CSUMB timeout. The Otters battled back to tie the game at 12-12 on #Katie Bos#'s ace and take the lead on a NDNU hitting error. The Argonauts responded by scoring eight consecutive points to pull away and cruise to a 25-17 first-set win.
The Otters raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and never looked back, scoring on #Elizabeth Hanna#'s two aces and a kill by Fall. NDNU tied the game at 16 apiece retook the lead on Shacklock's kill. The Otters tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 second-set victory.
Fall dominated the second set with seven kills on 16 attempts (.438) and Shacklock added five kills on six attempts (.833).
In the third and fourth sets, NDNU took early leads and captured the match with 25-16 and 25-15 wins.
NDNU's Christin Villamayor recorded a team-high 19 kills, with Caitlin Torres adding 11 kills and three block assists.
The Otters begin conference play on Friday, Sept. 11, hosting Cal State Stanislaus at the Otter Sports Center. Prior to the game, the 2009 CSUMB softball team will be honored with the unveiling of their CCAA Tournament banner in the gym. First serve is 7 p.m.
