SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay Otters dropped their season opener to the Red Storm of Dixie State College in the second match of the Otter Classic on Friday, Aug. 28. The Red Storm won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-14, before CSUMB rebounded in the third set with a 25-20 victory; however, the Otters could not keep the momentum, falling in the fourth set 25-14.
Senior #Kerri Sudarsana# and sophomore #Rheann Fall# led the Otters with 10 kills. Red-shirt freshman #Monique Sena#, in her first game in the Kelp Bed, dished out 14 assists and added 13 digs. Senior #Elizabeth Hanna# recorded three blocks.
CSUMB opened the match strong with a 2-1 lead before Dixie State rebounded with four straight, and never trailed for the remainder of the set. The Red Storm took a 14-6 lead before the Otters closed the gap to four at 18-14 on a forced error by Katie Luna. Dixie State went on a 7-3 run to win the set at 25-17.
The Otters took a quick 4-2 lead in the second set, topped on an ace by Hanna before the Red Storm rattled off nine points to take a 12-5 lead. Dixie State coasted the rest of the set for a 25-14 win.
The third set began with both teams trading points before the Otters got hot with senior #Katie Bos# serving five straight points to take a 8-3 lead. CSUMB took their largest lead of the set on back-to-back errors by Luna at 16-10. The Red Storm attempted a comeback by closing the gap to four before senior #Alisha Thomas# capped the set with a kill for a final score of 25-20.
In the fourth and eventual final set of the match, Dixie State jumped ahead 5-2 to start the frame, but CSUM was able to respond to close the score to 7-6 on a service ace by Fall. However, a 10-3 Red Storm fun pushed the visitors ahead 16-9, as they coasted on in for the 25-14 fourth-set score.
Luna had a team-high 16 kills for Dixie State, with Alex Shearer adding nine. The Red Storm collected nine total blocks.
The Otters look to rebound on Saturday, Aug. 29 as they face Dixie State again in the second day's first match, scheduled at 10 a.m. at the Otter Sports Center.

In the Otter Classic opener, Dixie State College swept the University of Findlay in three sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21.
Brita Noble and Katie Luna led the Red Storm with 11 kills. Kayley Poglajen racked up four aces and libero Jayci Jeffress finished with 22 digs.
For the Oilers, middle hitter Morgan had a team-high 13 kills and Abby Lavigne added 11 kills.
