SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Monterey Bay fall sports begin their 2009 campaign this weekend. The volleyball squad hosts the Otter Classic on Friday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29. at the Otter Sports Center.

VOLLEYBALL SEASON PREVIEW:
The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team begins the 2009 campaign this week by hosting the Otter Classic. The Otters will play the Red Storm of Dixie State College of Utah at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28 and again at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29. In the final match of the tournament, CSUMB will take on the Oilers of Findlay University (OH). All matches will be held at the Otter Sports Center.
The Otters return 10 players from the 2008 squad, graduating only #Niccole Deneke# who now serves at an assistant coach. With an addition of eight newcomers, the CSUMB team will carry its largest number of players in school history.
At the outside hitter spot, the Otters return seniors #Kerri Sudarsana# and #Alisha Thomas# as well as sophomore #Rheann Fall#. Junior college transfer #Kami Ward#, sophomore red-shirt transfer #Lauren Shacklock#, red-shirt freshman transfer #Izzy Barth# and freshman #Erin Stoddard# will be added to the mix.
Senior #Elizabeth Hanna# returns to lead the middle blockers after finishing last season with a team-high 75 blocks. Sophomores #Tiffaney Riggs# and #Melanie Lashbrook# with the addition of freshman #Olivia Lopez# will round out the middle position.
Returning at setter for the Otters is junior #Dana Grimm#, who played in all 107 sets a season ago, totaling 824 assists and 249 digs. CSUMB will also look to red-shirt freshman #Monique Sena# and junior college transfer #Lauren Manzo#.
In the backcourt, CSUMB returns senior #Katie Bos# and sophomore #Dionna Lucas# who combined for 527 digs last season. Freshmen outside hitter #Lauren Ding# and #Tori Taijeron# will be able to contribute to the Otter defense.
