Otters Defeat Cal State East Bay In Five

Fall leads Otters with 17 kills

SEASIDE, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team recorded its first home five-set victory of the season with a 3-2 win (25-21, 24-26, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12) over Cal State East Bay on Friday night at the Otter Sports Center.

CSUMB was led by sophomore #Rheann Fall# who recorded 17 kills and 15 digs.  Senior #Alisha Thomas# posted 11 kills and nine digs, while senior #Elizabeth Hanna# totaled seven kills and eight blocks. Junior setter #Dana Grimm# dished out 25 assists with junior #Lauren Manzo# adding 13. Senior #Katie Bos# finished with 26 digs.

The Otters jumped out 7-2 in the opening set by forcing five Pioneer errors including a block by Hanna and freshman #Lauren Ding#. CSUMB kept at least a three point lead until the Pioneers rallied back with five consecutive points to make it 22-20. A kill by freshman #Tiffaney Riggs# forced a CSUEB timeout at 23-20.  After a Pioneer kill, Hanna put down back-to-back kills to win the first set, 25-21.

The teams appeared evenly matched in the second set as the score was tied a total of 11 times.  A 6-0 run by the Pioneers gave them a 22-18 lead. The Otters battled to close the gap to 22-20, capped by a Fall ace.  A Hanna kill got CSUMB within one point and a CSUEB attacking error tied it at 24-24. The Pioneers recorded two points to tie the match at 1-1.

The third set looked similar to the second until the Otters pulled away at the 13-13 mark with an 8-4 run topped by blocking duo Riggs and Fall.  CSUMB cruised to a 25-20 third set victory.

CSUMB took an early 10-4 lead in the third set as Fall recorded two kills for CSUMB. Senior #Kerri Sudarsana#'s second kill of the set pushed the Otters lead to 17-10. The Pioneer racked off a 10-3 run to equalize the set at 20-20 and forced a fifth set with a 25-21 victory.

Fall began the final set with a kill which CSUEB answered with one of its own by Katie Gellerman.  After two ties, the Otters went on a 4-0 run capped by a Thomas kill.  CSUEB fought back with three straight points to tie the game at 6.  Errors by both teams with CSUEB tallying more gave CSUMB the lead at 9-7.  Two kills by Fall and an ace by Thomas gave the Otters a 12-7 advantage.  The Otters cruised to a 15-12 victory. 

“I am proud of how the team finished and stayed confident in all aspects of their game,” said head coach Jody Garry. “CSUEB is a really good team.”

CSUEB was led by Sukhjit Athwal and Brianna Bryant with 15 and 11 kills respectively. 

Both teams finished with nine aces, but the Otters won the battle of the blocks by racking up 14 to CSUEB's nine.

The Otters host their final home match of the season on Saturday, Nov. 7, welcoming No. 2 UC San Diego to the Otter Sports Center at 7 p.m.  Prior to the game, CSUMB will say farewell to four seniors; #Katie Bos#, #Alisha Thomas#, #Kerri Sudarsana# and #Elizabeth Hanna#.
