SEASIDE, Calif.
– Junior #Lauren Shacklock# and sophomore #Rheann Fall# put on a tremendous performance, lifting the Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 sweep of non-conference opponent Academy of Art University in Otter Sports Center.

The Otters improved to 7-10 while the Urban Knights picked up their sixth loss (15-6) of the season.

Shacklock led CSUMB with 15 kills and a .480 attack percentage, while Fall chipped in 11 kills, eight digs and two aces. Senior middle hitter #Elizabeth Hanna# contributed seven kills and three blocks. Sophomore #Tiffaney Riggs# notched six blocks and senior #Katie Bos# added a team-high 13 digs. Freshman #Monique Sena# and junior #Dana Grimm# dished out 16 and 15 assists respectively.

AAU was led by Dan Yan's 15 kills. The Otters outhit the Urban Knights .269 to .181.

The Urban Knights took a 5-4 lead in the first set, but a Sena ace and back-to-back kills by Shacklock put the Otters on top at 7-5. AAU would fight back to tie the set twice at 12 and 14 before CSUMB took charge.  The Otters went on a four-point run that was capped with a kill by senior #Kerri Sudarsana# and forcing an AAU timeout at 22-18. CSUMB took set one at 25-21 and outhit the Urban Knights .270 to 214.

CSUMB held a small advantage at the beginning of the second set, but saw it slip away as AAU took a 10-5 lead.  At 17-12, the Otters were forced to take their second timeout and regroup, resulting in a 10-5 run.  CSUMB tied it at 22-22 on a Bos ace and took the lead on a solo block by Hanna.  After a CSUMB hitting error, Hanna crushed the ball to give the Otter a set-point.  CSUMB forced a AAU error to take the second set, 25-23.

CSUMB was on fired from the start of the third set, never trailing throughout the set and taking a 13-8 lead out of the gates.  The Otters saw their lead slip to two at 18-16 and both teams would trade points until an AAU four-point run would tie it at 22-22.  Once again, Shacklock stepped up with back-to-back kills, positioning the Otters for their first match-point.  Hanna clutched the victory on an ace.

“I was glad to see the team respond to the challenge of being more aggressive in all aspects of the game,” said head coach #Jody Garry#. “I thought we adjusted well and had two necessary comebacks in the second set for a win.

“I was impressed with Shack (Lauren Shacklock) on the outside and (Katie) Bos controlling our pass/defend game.”
