ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team picked up its ninth victory of the season on Saturday night, defeating the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State in four sets, 25-21, 25-13, 20-25, 25-18.
The Otter improved to 9-15 overall and 4-11 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action while the Lumberjacks dropped to 7-17, 3-13 in conference play.
Senior #Alisha Thomas# posted a season-high 20 kills with a .360 clip while senior #Kerri Sudarsana# recorded her second double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore #Rheann Fall# tied a career-high five aces on top of a dozen kills and digs. Junior #Lauren Manzo# dished out a season-high 46 assists.
The Otters and Jacks traded leads to begin the opening set until CSUMB turned on the guns after being down 16-14 by scoring five consecutive points and forcing a HSU timeout. CSUMB won the first set 25-21 on a Sudarsana kill to record a team .367 attack percentage.
CSUMB carried the momentum into the second set, taking a 15-3 lead capped by an ace by Fall. The Otters sailed to a 25-13 victory after a repeat hitting performance of .367.
The Lumberjacks came out strong in the third set, racing to an 8-3 lead. CSUMB tied it up at 12-12 on a dump by Manzo. After six tied scores, HSU closed the set with a 6-2 run to win 25-20.
CSUMB jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth and final set on kills by Hanna and Thomas along with a block between the duo. HSU came back and took its first lead of the set on an ace by Joliann Arzadon. A kill by Sudarsana sparked a 6-1 run and led to a 25-18 victory.
HSU was led by Oceana Matsubu with 11 kills and 11 digs.
The Otters return to the Kelp Bed for their final homestand of the season, in a Dig for the Cure match against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. For more information,
