Chudivan finishes West Regional Championship in 14th place

Cicilia Chudivan finished in 14th place at the West Regional.
PHOENIX --- #Cicilia Chudivan#, representing CSU Monterey Bay as an individual, shot an 80 in the final round of the NCAA Division II West Regional Championship on Wednesday and finished in 14th place.

Tarleton State University won the tournament at The Legacy Golf Club hosted by Grand Canyon University. Tarleton State shot 910 as a team, finishing four strokes ahead of Western Washington University's 914. Both teams qualified for the NCAA Championships May 13-17 in Houston.

Stephanie Bird of Northeastern State (Okla.)  and Grand Canyon's Jessica McKay qualified for nationals as individuals. Bird shot a final round 75 to finish at 5-over 221. McKay shot 77 to finish at 8-over 224. Chudivan was 18-over at 234.

Coach Teri Greene said Chudivan hit the ball really well, but Chudivan said she didn't putt well. "I missed a couple of birdies I could have made. I had a hard time putting today," she said.

Tarleton State's Shraddhanjali Singh shot 3-under 69 Wednesday to win the tournament with a 2-over 218. Teammate Carla Cooper was fourth at 225, and Western Washington's Breanna Carmichael and Kaitlin Parker tied for fifth at 226.

St. Martin's University placed third as a team at 940. St. Edward's was fourth at 941, Northeastern State's fifth at 945 and Western New Mexico sixth at 968.

As a team, CSU Monterey Bay was ranked No. 21 in the last national poll and finished the season seventh in the West Region. Only the top six teams from each region advanced to the Regional Championships.

"We are really proud of the girls. They had a great season," said Greene. "Coming in seventh in the region was great. Next year we plan on making it to the regional tournament."

Chudivan, a sophomore, plans on being back next year and playing even better.

"I had a pretty good season; better than last spring," Chudivan said. "I think my game is getting better and better. I'm getting more consistent on my shots."

Chudivan's favorite memory from the season was her win at the Maverick Invitational in Grand Junction, Colo. She shot five birdies on the back nine to finish the first day and take a four-stroke lead. She held on the second day, hitting an 85 in high winds, to win the tourney.

"Hitting those birdies felt great," she said. "I will always remember that."
