Baseball team makes wild comeback in eighth inning

SEASIDE --- Cal State Monterey Bay scored seven runs in the eighth inning to defeat CSU San Bernardino 13-12 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The victory broke a 13-game losing streak for CSUMB. The Otters lost the second game 13-1.

CSUMB starter #Nadav Poringer# started the day well, pitching two perfect innings, but left in the fourth after giving up 10 runs. Greg Fisher gave up another two in relief and CSUMB trailed 12-6 in the bottom of the eighth.

But the Otters (8-28) would score score seven runs to take the lead and #Daniel Bifano# (2-5), who came in to pitch in the seventh, finished up a scoreless three-inning performance to earn the victory. The big rally started when leadoff hitter #Brent Sargenti# was hit by a pitch. #Shea Davis# and #Matt DeJesus# both singled, #Steve Mays# walked and #Andrew Marquardt# blasted a double to centerfield. Three more batters would reach base by either being hit by a pitch or by walking, and then Sargenti finished off the rally with a two-RBI single down the left field line.

DeJesus finished the day 3-6 with 4 RBIs, Marquardt was 2-4 with 3 RBIs and Sargenti and Davis both went 3-4 with 3 RBIs. Sargenti scored three runs as well. Bifano allowed two hits and one walk and struck out two in his three innings of work.

CSUMB did not comeback from the big deficit in the second game. CSU San Bernardino (17-19) scored three in the first and kept pouring it on in the seven-inning game. Starter #Brian Callen# took the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings and giving up nine hits and eight runs, all earned.

The two teams finish the four-game series on Sunday with a game at noon.
